Board Feature: Martha Watters

Meet our incredible board member, Martha Watters! Martha lives in Davenport and is incredibly supportive of the Komen community. Learn more about her below!

What is your profession + why do you do it?

I retired in 2013. Before retiring, I was a network administrator for an engineering firm for 16 years. Prior to that, I worked in banking for 25 years.

Why did you get involved in Susan G. Komen Greater Iowa’s board?

I was on the board of Komen Quad Cities and came to KGI after we merged in 2017. When I worked in banking, we were “encouraged” to pick 3 organizations to volunteer for. I continued this tradition after leaving the banking world. While at the engineering firm, my boss – the CFO – was asked by a Komen Quad Cities board member if he knew of anyone who would consider joining the board as treasurer. He asked me if I was interested, so I met with the current president of the board and the rest is history!

How have you been affected by breast cancer?

I am lucky that no one in my family has had breast cancer. However, I have had several close friends who have gone through treatment. And, I have become close to so many who are survivors or are living with metastatic breast cancer since joining Komen.

What excites you about the work of Susan G. Komen Greater Iowa?

The mission work that we do excites me. Hearing the stories of those who we have helped touches my heart deeply. I am proud to be part of an organization that works towards finding a cure for this disease.

How can people get involved with the SGK?
